Haarlem, Les Héritiers Loosjes, 1869. Very large 8vo (28.3 x 19.0 cm). 151 pp.; 33 tinted lithographed plates, of which 14 double-sized. Original printed wrappers.
An excellent, extremely well-illustrated monograph of fossil turtles and tortoises, written by the Dutch herpetologist, ichthyologist, palaeontologist and Darwinist, Tiberius Cornelius Winkler (1822-1897), and published in the Archives du Musée Teyler. The Teyler Museum is the oldest natural history museum in the Netherlands, founded in 1784. Some chipping to spine cover ends; hardly noticeable foxing, and in general a very good copy indeed. Rare in this state. Cat BM(NH), p. 2338; Nissen ZBI, 4423.
