Portrait of the famous French naturalist George Louis Leclerq [or le Clerq], Comte de Buffon (1707-1788) whose influence on popular natural history remains apparent to this day. Claude Baron made the engraving under the supervision of Jean Germain Drouais (1763-1788), the French historical painter and portraitist, Baron also worked for Buffon, engraving many birds and mammals for his publications. The printed surface is 20.0 x 16.1 cm. A few, small, marginal smudges, otherwise very good.
