Berlin, Wiegandt, Hempel und Parey, 1876. 8vo (25.3 x 16.2 cm). Title page, 74 pp.; four lithographed plates. Original blind-stamped cloth with ornamental gilt title on the front board. Brown endpapers, lightly marbled edges.

The German animal breeder Hermann Engelhard von Nathusius (1809-1879) is perhaps best known for his " Vorstudien zur Geschichte und Zucht der Hausthiere. Zunächst am Schweineschädel" (1864). this, however, is his much lesser known, but no less important contribution on the variation in rabbits under domestication. The author compares his own findings with, chronologically, the writings of several authors. Most prominent being Charles Darwin. No less than nine pages are spent on his " Variation of animals and plants under domestication" (1868). A well-illustrated work. Slight rubbing to the boards, with the spine a bit discoloured; front inner joint starting, otherwise internally a very good, clean copy. Cat. BM(NH) p. 1396. Not in Nissen.
