Vienna, Sumptibus Joannis Pauli Kraus, 1782. 4to (28.4 x 21.0 cm). 16 pp.; five very large, folded engraved plates. Contemporary marbled wrappers.

Rare early treatise on Slovenian Alpine plants by the French-Austrian botanist, geologist and medical doctor Balthasar Hacquet (1739-1815). This is the true first edition. A second edition with 31 pages was published later in the same year (vide Stafleu and Cowan), another edition does not mention Wappler as printer. All are very rare. One plate includes a dragonfly (Odonata). The engraving of a large thistle, by Joseph Pallnstorff, is magnificent. Uncut. Fore-edges therefore uneven. Some scattered spotting; slightly soiled; a small, vague dampstain in the gutter; otherwise a very good, unmarked copy. Nissen BBI, 771; Stafleu and Cowan, 2232.
