Paris, L. Guerin, 1866. Large 4to (32.0 x 24.5 cm). [ii], 264 pp.; nine finely engraved plates. Original printed wrappers.

A very rare, large paper on the external and internal anatomy of a race of chimpanzees, with fine illustrations, including those of the skull and other skeleton parts. The work includes an overview of what was known then about chimpanzees. The first author, Louis Pierre Gratiolet (1815-1865), was a French zoologist and anatomist who succeeded Isodore Geoffroy St. Hilaire as professor in zoology at the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris. This work was published in the Muséum's Nouvelles Archives, volume 2, shortly after the untimely death of Gratiolet. Uncut. Some scattered light spotting, but less than usual, and otherwise a very good, clean copy. Nissen ZBI, 4561.
