Cape Town, The South African Museum, 1939. Thick 8vo (24.2 x 16.9 cm). iii, 660 pp.; 57 (groups of) text figures; 19 plates. Near contemporary burgundy buckram. Gilt title on the spine. Speckled edges.

The magnum opus of the British (later South African) malacologist Matthew William Kemble Connolly (1872-1947). This work is well-illustrated: text figures range from line-drawings (some groups page-sized) to photos, and the plates include fine lithographs and phototypes. Several new species are described and illustrated. Data from Moçambique and other neighbouring states are included. This work was published as the Museum's Annals volume 33: as such - i.e. in wrappers - not uncommon, but a well-bound copy such as this one is seldom seen. Small stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the top margin of the front wrapper; spine a bit sunned, otherwise a very good, clean copy.
