Linnaeus, Carolus
Linné och hans lärjungar. [After Brusewitz]
[Halmstad], Svenska Familj-Journalens Förlag, [1897]. Oblong sheet (33.6 x 40.6 cm) with full colour mezzotint plate (27.0 x 35.5 cm), and printed caption.
This coloured mezzotint is a copy of an oil painting by the Swedish painter Gustaf Henrik Brusewitz (1812-1899). Brusewitz painted this allegorical piece in 1866. It shows Linnaeus in a Swedish summer landscape, surrounded by his students, with Linnaeus holding a flowering plant in his left hand. The number of disciples - twelve - does not seem to be coincidental. A printed caption state that it was published by the Swenska [SIC: Svenska] Familj-Journalens Förlag. It is not dated but probably it was published in 1897. This print also exists in an uncoloured version, known to be published in that year. Closed tear in the upper margin, with some additional blank stickers on the plate verso. Otherwise very good. Not in Soulsby (Soulsby, 3219 has an identical description, but, being dated 1863, cannot be the same).
