Augsburg, Jean Benedict Winckler, ca. 1770. Oblong broadsheet (35.1 x 47.2 cm). Engraved plate, handcoloured.

This is a fine panorama, originally engraved by the Dutch engraver Simon Fokke (1712-1784), and first published in the Atlas of Fouquet, a collection of views of Amsterdam published in 1765 by Pierre Fouquet Jr. (1729-1800). This is a summer evening view of the old marina, situated in the northwesternmost corner of 17th- and 18th-century Amsterdam, near a bulwark named Blaauwhoofd (Blue Head). This version, however, is a re-engraving by the German artist Johann Benedikt Winckler (1727-1797). The header, Vue du Y devant Amsterdam, was printed in mirror image, indicating a vue d'optique, or perspective view, for use in combination with a zograscope, creating a seemingly larger image, with some sense of depth. Some creasing, soiling, and some short tears in the margins; with on the lower margin an old, rather clumsy paper repair. The colouring is neatly done. A wide-margined copy.
