Lagden, G. [Y.]
The Basutos, the mountaineers & their country. Being a narrative of events relating to the tribe from its formation early in the nineteenth century to the present day .
London, Hutchinson, 1909. Two volumes in two. 8vo ()21.7 x 14.2 cm). 718 pp. [xvi, 1-338; xii, 339-690]; nine maps of which one large, folding, and 70 photographic plates. Original, uniform brown cloth with gilt title on the spines, gilt borders and gilt vignette on the front boards. Top edges gilt.
Well-illustrated anthropological and historical study of the Basutos and Basutoland, now known as Lesotho. Rarer than the later American (Appleton, 1910) edition. Written by the British colonial administrator Godfrey Yeatman Lagden (1851-1934). This set with a gilt vignette "Na morena oa Basuto ki tiisitse" [Approved by the Basuto King] on the front boards: a very rare case of a text in Sesotho printed on an English work. Complete and in very good condition apart from some small chips to heads of spine and some weak rubbing to the cloth of the front panels, the second volume being slightly cocked, and a few library stamps in volume II. Both volumes with a blind-stamp "with the publisher's compliments". Overall, a very good, solid set.
