Nuremberg, les héritiers de feu G. W. Knorr, 1779. Folio (46.5 x 33.0 cm). Six very beautiful hand-coloured engraved plates, in portfolio.

This is a selection of plates from the herpetological section of the rare first edition of the large format Deliciae Naturae Selectae oder auserlesenes Naturaliencabinet, or the French printing of the same. It is a rare, truly great and sumptuously illustrated German natural history book from the Golden Age of southern German printing. The plates depict turtles, tortoises, and lizards from mainly tropical regions. The plates are numbered L., L.I, L.III to L.VI, thus forming the start of the herpetology, but without L.II. The plates were painted by Johann Christoph Keller, Christian Leinberger and others. The engravings are of a very high standard and the original colouring is simply beautiful, being lively, bright, and scientifically correct. A very nice clean set. Nissen ZBI, 2227; Ludwig, p. 304 and 346-347 and colour plate XLVI; Dance, A History of Shell Collecting, p. 78-79.
