Written by the German zoologist Wilhelm Carl Hartwig Peters (1815-1883). A detailed study of a new genus and species of fairly large (15 KG) neotropical rodents, now known as pacarana, and distantly related to the guinea pig, capibara and capa. Its only known close relatives are all extinct. The finely hand-coloured plate, made by Gustav Ludwig Heinrich Mützel (1839–1893) shows a living animal; the other plates show the skull, and other skeleton parts. Mützel was the favorite artist of Alfred Brehm, Anton Reichenow, Nikolai Przewalski and many others. Published in the Festschrift zur Feier des hundertjährigen Bestehens der Gesellschaft Naturforschender Freunde zu Berlin. This seems to be an offprint.
