Pavlov, I. P. [Pawlow]
[Lektsii o rabote glavnikh pischevaritelnikh zhelez; Lectures on the work of the principal digestive glands].
Moscow, Priroda, 1917. 8vo (19.5 x 13 cm) xvi, 230 pp. Contemporary half cloth over marbled boards with original printed title with floral borders mounted on front board.
Second Russian edition of Pavlov's work on the digestive glands, which earned him the Nobel Prize in 1904, and one of the most important books in neurobiology. The first edition was published in 1897. Even this second edition is now extremely difficult to find. On the front cover and title page, and some text page margins the signature and private stamp of Ivan Yakovlevich Yakovlev (1848–1930) was a Chuvash educator, Orthodox missionary, Russian teacher, organizer of public schools, inspector (director) of Chuvash schools in the Kazan Educational District (1875–1903) and the Simbirsk Chuvash Teachers' School (1868–1919). He was the creator of the new (modern) Chuvash alphabet (1870s). Paper a bit uniformly age-toned, but overall a very good copy. Dibner, 135; Garrison and Morton, 1022; PMM, 385 (for first edition).
