Suckow, F. W. L.
Anatomisch-Physiologische Untersuchungen der Insekten und Krustenthiere. Ersten Bandes erstes Heft. [All published].
Heidelberg, Engelmann, 1818. 4to (27.5 x 22.1 cm). 90 pp.; 11 copper-engraved plates including one hand-coloured. Contemporary quarter grained calf over marbled boards. Gilt title on spine, green morocco label with gilt title on front board. Original printed wrapper pasted on front pastedown.
Rare work on the morphology and anatomy of crustaceans and insects. Half the work is devoted to the fresh water crayfish Astacus fluviatilis Fabricius, a now seriously endangered species. Written by the German medical doctor and invertebrate zoologist, Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Suckow (1770-1838). The coloured plate shows the life stadia of the pine-tree lappet moth, Bombix pini Linnaeus, which is widely regarded as a pest. Uncut. The anatomical plates are a bit spotted, otherwise a very good, clean, and attractively bound copy. Horn-Schenkling, 21717.
