Upsala, Lundequist, 1843-1864. Thick 8vo (19.8 x 12.1 cm). 1,137 pp. [I (1843) (ii), iv, 328; II (1852) (vi) 344; III (1864) vii, 448], one folded subscription leaf. Later cloth; spine with gilt bands and title. Marbled endpapers.

A complete set, including the rare first volume in first edition, of a major work by the famous Swedish mycologist and one of the founders of modern taxonomic mycology, Elias Magnus Fries (1794-1878). Published over a long period, and rarely found complete. The title translates as Botanical excursions. A collection of scattered occasional writings. The first volume is usually found in the second (1853) edition. Provenance: small, old owner's inscriptions in the first title page top margin by the Swedish botanists Henrik Gustaf Lübeck (1809-1900), and Johan Erikson (1862-1938). Lübeck's herbarium is in the Natural History Museum in London. A few underlinings in light pencil, some small repairs in the text without loss and some toning and marginal spotting due to the quality of the paper, otherwise a very good, clean copy. The later binding is of a timeless, elegant simplicity. Volbracht, 651. Not in Stafleu and Cowan.
