[Bussum,] M. C. Escher, 1943. Single leaf (16.0 x 12.0 cm). Oval print (8.0 x 6.0 cm) numbered "7" in the lower right margin. Verso blank.

A bookplate made by Maurits Escher for the Dutch luitenant-ter-zee ( navy commander) and publisher against his will, August Marinus Eliza "Guus" Van Dishoeck (1892-1973). Guus, named after his grandfather, who founded the Van Dishoeck publishing house, reluctantly followed in his father's footsteps after his sudden death in 1931. Twelve years later, amidst WWII, he commissioned Escher to design this apocalyptical bookplate. An excellent, clean, nera mint copy. Bool 329.
