Very rare, never distributed supplement plates to the original work in eight volumes (1779-1792). Between 1779 and 1793 Ernst and Engramelle published eight volumes on the "Papillons d'Europe". As this was prior to colour printing, each etching plate depicting the butterflies was meticulously hand-coloured in detail. These volumes were sold to subscribers which included the king and queen of France, members of the royal family, the king of Spain, the king of Sweden and a goodly company of the notabilities. In 1788 the publishers had announced their intention of issuing another volume. In 1792 and 1793 the subscription notice was repeated. However, because of events at the time, in particular the French Revolution, it is unlikely this project was completed. One day, just after World War I (1914-1918), Mr R. Homberg discovered some butterfly plates in the window of a second-hand bookstore. After research, these turned out to be the missing plates of Volume 9, which was never completed or distributed to subscribers, who were for the most part guillotined or had emigrated. There are eight different plates, all by the German natural history illustrator Maria Eleonora Hochecker (1761-1834). Figures are numbered from 169 to 280. For more details see the article by R. Homberg in The Journal of the Society for the Bibliography of Natural History, Vol. III, Part I, p. 28-33 (1953). Of Plate 6 - not seen by Homberg and not recorded in any bibliography - only a single copy, probably a proof copy, is known. An index of the plates has been added in photocopy.
