Leidae [Leiden], J. C. Cyfveer, 1832. Large 4to (26.6 x 21.2 cm). Half-title, title page, [iv], vi, 108, [i] pp.; three finely lithographed plates of which two in original hand-colouring. Original printed boards.
Rare thesis by the Dutch, later South African zoologist Johannes Smuts (1808-1869). The work provides an early scientific review of the mammals of South Afica, more in particular the eastern Cape province, with the inclusion of several new species. In tital, 107 species of mammals are recorded and described, including the now extinct Quagga and Bluebuck. Six species are new, including two bats, one shrew, a pangolin, and two mice. Boards soiled, worn at edges, back strip partly detached; upper outer corner bumped; otherwise, very good, clean and unmarked. Uncoloured copies are known, too. The osteological plate is always plain. Rare, especially in an original binding. Cat. BM(NH) p. 1954; Casey Wood, p. 572. Not in Nissen ZBI.
