Leipzig, Wilhelm Engelmann, 1883. Large 4to (33.1 x 26.8 cm). Title pages, vii, 126 pp.; 13 fine, large, tinted lithographed plates (one partially in chromolithography), with explanatory text leaves; one text illustration. Original printed wrappers.

Important monograph on arrow worms (Chaetognatha) of the Mediterranean Sea. Arrow worms are a small, ancient group (known from the Cambrian epoch) characterized by their bristle jaws. The plates are morphological, anatomical, histological and cell-biological. Author is the Italian zoologist, Battista Grassi (1854-1925). Written in Italian. The second title, therefore, reads I chetognati. Anatomia e sistimatica con aggiunte embriologiche. Uncut. Light wear to wrapper edges, otherwise a fine, clean copy. Very rare, especially in such a good state. Modern "reprints" are no match. Nissen ZBI, 1678.
