Blanford, W. T.
The Fauna of British India, including Ceylon and Burma. Mammalia. [Annotated copy].
London, Taylor and Francis, [1888]-1891. 8vo (21.6 x 15.6 cm). xx, 617, [ii] pp.; 199 steel engravings. Contemporary brown, pebbled cloth. Spine with gilt lines and title.
Annotated copy of a seldom-seen and well-illustrated publication. A former owner, the British Army Major William Wilfrid Cordeaux (1860-after 1913), who served many years with the 21st Lancers in Rawal Pindi (Rawalpindi, Pakistan, part of Punjab), added notes on specific animals he had observed in the wild - or shot - including localities, dates and measurements. He corrected several errors, too, for instance in the use of local animal names. Apart from these very interesting marginalia, there is a clipping from The Times (26 April 1913) of a letter to the editor regarding Indian wolves, written by Cordeaux. A second clipping, regarding the Indian antelope, is inserted too. This copy belongs to an edition that combines the first part (published in 1888) with the second, giving a new (1891) preface. Label on spine foot; stamp on the front pastedown, and a weak blind-stamp in the title page leaf; otherwise a very good, clean copy. Casey Wood, p. 243. Not in Nissen, ZBI.
