Wien, the "Herausgeber", 1818. 8vo (18.1 x 11.1 cm). Frontispiece, [xvi], 328 pp.; 40 hand-coloured plates with 70 images. Contemporary tree-calf resembling paper covered boards. Spine with gilt lines, vignette, and red morocco label with gilt title. Edges dyed yellow.

Part of a large series, but the only volume dealing with amphibians and reptiles, including snakes and turtles. As usual with German publications from this era, "Amphibien" refers to reptiles too. Written by the German dean, father and teacher Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm (1758-1811). The vast majority of the attractive illustrations are well-coloured; a few are, deliberately, merely tinted in one or two colours. This edition was published after Wilhelm's death by the "Herausgeber". Boards rubbed at the edges, spine with a vertical crack, binding a bit weak; a few text pages a bit spotted, some plates with some thumbing in the lower margin, but in all still a nice, complete copy with text and plates clean. Adler III, pp. 50-51; Crane Library, AC9 (first ed.), AC11 (other ed.); Nissen ZBI, 4408.
