On Cyrtandreae. From Horsfield's Plantae Javanicae rariores. [Preprint or "preissue"].
London, R. and J. Taylor, 1839. Folio (38.0 x 27.6 cm). Title page, 22 pp. (numbered 1-3, [4 blank) 105-122]; two fine, tissue-guarded engraved plates. Contemporary quarter cloth over blind boards.
Precedes the book parts in which these sections appeared by at least four months; for an account of the disagreements about publication see Maberley (1985): "By May 1838 the ms. accompanying plates 24... and 25 was still not with the printer... In March 1839 the final section on plate 25... had still not reached Horsfield who, at last, lost his control..."; it is not clear whether he was happy with the present preprint. For the Plantae Javanicae Rariores see Bennett, J., Stafleu and Cowan 418. Uncut. Boards a bit frayed at edges; text very mildly foxed, plates clean. Maberley, Jupiter Botanicus. Robert Brown of the British Museum pp. 318-321; Stafleu and Cowan, 836.
