Gould, J.
A hummingbird, the great sapphirewing, Pterophanes temmincki Gould. By John Gould.
London, the author, 1849 [REPRINT Mergus, Germany]. (64.1 x 49.5 cm). Full colour facsimile.
A stunning, gigantic plate by the famous bird painter and ornithologist John Gould (1804-1881), depicting a colourful bird from tropical America, first published in Gould's famous A Monograph of the Trochilidae or Family of Humming Birds (1849-1887). Both sexes are illustrated, and both have a beautiful, though very differently coloured plumage. This species was named after the great Dutch ornithologist Coenraad Jacob Temminck (1778-1858). It occurs in the Andes region, from Colombia to Bolivia, and including Ecuador and Peru. This excellent reproduction is faithful to the original in every detail. An excellent, clean, mint copy.
