Gräffe, E., and others
Journal des Museum Godeffroy. Geographische, ethnographische und naturwissenschaftliche Mittheilungen. Heft II. [The complete geographical and ethnographical part].
Hamburg, L. Friederichsen, 1873. Large 4to (34.1 x 25.7 cm). 58 pp. Two maps (one very large, multi-folded), seven tinted plates. Original printed wrappers.
Part of the first volume of a very rare natural history periodical which dealt with the topography, ethnography, zoology, and botany of the South Sea islands, based on collections and records made by German naturalists. It contains detailed maps and views of several islands and island groups, in particular Samoa and Yap (Carolines). With, for instance, a very large folded map of the harbour of Apia on Upolu (Samoa), with additional profiles of the coast line, and much more on language, people, etc. This is the complete geographical and ethnographical part of Heft II. Not included are three subsequent zoological papers (pp. 59-103) and their five plates, (numbered 8-12). Uncut. Wrapper edges chipped and frayed, with a larger piece missing in the rear wrapper top inner corner, however, not affecting the text (a catalogue of other Friedrichsen publications); bindings worn with gatherings loose. Some water-staining to the text and plates, mostly marginal but on some plates more extensive in the lower part, otherwise good. Cat. BM(NH), p. 686.
