Büttikofer, J.
Die Kurzschwanzaffen von Celebes.
Leiden, E. J. Brill, 1917. 8vo (25.0 x 17.6 cm). 86 pp.; 12 numbered plates including four in chromolithography, and one large, folded map. Original printed wrappers.
A seldom-seen, beautifully illustrated work on the short-tailed monkeys of Sulawesi, by the Swiss zoologist, and director of the Rotterdam Zoo, Johann Büttikofer (1850-1927), principally known for his ornithological work, but this is a fine monograph of primates. Plates includes photographs of skulls, and full colour illustrations of living specimens drawn by the accomplished natural history painter Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek (1873-1944), a member of a famous family of painters. Offprint from the Zoologische Mededeelingen published on behalf of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (now Naturalis) in Leiden. Provenance: the autograph of the Dutch zoologist Willem Cornelis van Heurn (1887-1972) over the drophead title, and his name written in the top margin of the front wrapper. Binding a bit weak; otherwise a very good, clean copy.
