A seldom-seen work by the German entomologist August Wilhelm Knoch (1742-1818). Much earlier, in 1781-1783, he published three works titled Beiträge zur Insectenkunde. Twenty years later, he started this Neue Beyträge, but the present volume remained all that was published. Provenance: Small bookplate of Lionel George Higgins mounted on the front pastedown. Higgins (1891-1985) "...was a British surgeon and an amateur lepidopterist. [He] took an interest in natural history at an early age but from 1922 he worked on the taxonomy and systematics of the butterflies. He published his major work - A Field Guide to the Butterflies of Britain and Europe (1970) - in collaboration with Norman D. Riley. Associated with this he published The Classification of European Butterflies (1975). He was also an avid collector of butterflies, colling as far afield as in Kashmir, the Pamirs and the Urals. His collection of over 30000 specimens was bequeathed to the Natural History Museum in London" (Wikipedia). Also, with a Polish (?) name written in an old hand at the bottom of the front pastedown, and an old stamp in cyrillic on the title page. Boards rubbed, partly discoloured; small tear in the front free endpaper; text and plates, however, very good, and apart from some weak age-toning and spots, clean.
