Elberfeld, Schön, [1821]-1822-1827. Folio (39.1 x 24.9 cm). Two half-titles, two title pages (Latin and German), [vi] (dedication leaf; list of subscribers, preface), 116, [iv], 130, [iv] (index) pp.; 53 engraved and partially hand-coloured plates [numbered I-XLIX, III.B, XLV.B, XLVI.B, XLVI.C]. Original printed boards.

A well-illustrated monograph of German blackberries, including several new or little-known wild blackberry species. Written (in German) by the German botanists Carl Ernst August Weihe (1779-1834) and Christian Gottfried Daniel Nees von Esenbeck (1776-1858), and dedicated to Baron von Schlechtendal, after whom a new species was named. Includes a list of subscribers. The work is bilingual; the Latin text precedes the German text. Nissen states that Pritzel cites 60 plates, but that is incorrect. Boards rubbed; paper a bit toned, with some mild, irregular spotting. Some peculiar worm traces in the lower outer corner (outside the printed surface) of the plates after Plate IX, and diminishing again towards the last plates. Otherwise very good, clean, unmarked. Very uncommon. There are no auction records since 1997, and only four after WWII. Nissen BBI, 2125; Pritzel, 10134; Stafleu and Cowan, 17002.
