Geneve, J. Kessmann, 1858-1861. 4to (29.0 x 22.2 cm). 82 pp., six lithographed plates. Original printed wrappers (protected by transparent paper).

A rare work with the description and illustration of many new species of crabs, shrimps, isopods, and ostracods. Especially the crabs are nicely illustrated, many other (smaller) crustaceans are more simply rendered, with emphasis on the taxonomically important parts. The Swiss zoologist Henri Louis Frédéric de Saussure (1829-1905), who was principally interested in arthropods, published four parts in all; the other three - not included here - are on entomological subjects. This is the only one dealing with Crustacea. A seldom seen loose leaf, titled Appendice and containing pp. 81-82, is inserted. In it, de Saussure commented on Simpson's monograph of the North American crustaceans, published in the May 1859 issue of the American Journal of Science and Arts. A fine, clean copy. Nissen ZBI, 3599.
